PEI STUDENT ENTREPRENEUR PROVINCIAL CHAMPION NAMED
03.02.2009

Charlottetown, PEI (February 25, 2009) – David Burke, owner of  Ride-On grass cutting and full time student at University of Prince Edward Island, has been named the 2009 PEI Student Entrepreneur Provincial Champion by national charitable organization, Advancing Canadian Entrepreneurship “ACE” and proud program supporter, CIBC.

As an avenue to pay for university, David, a Bachelor of Science student at the University of PEI, has owned and operated Ride-On grass cutting, that provides lawn care services to commercial businesses, residential and seasonal homeowners in the Charlottetown and the surrounding areas. Services include grass cutting, yard maintenance, and fall and spring clean up.

Operating Ride-On grass cutting has provided David with the opportunity to:

·         Grow from 12 to 50+ customers

·         Hire one full time employee as well as one part-time employee

·         Expand his lawn-care business into its fifth year.

“ACE has done an outstanding job in recognizing and rewarding the student entrepreneurs across Canada who have taken the initiative to start their own businesses.  I am looking forward to representing Prince Edward Island and the University of Prince Edward Island at the regional competition in Halifax,” says David. “This competition will give me a chance to showcase my business both locally and regionally. And finally an opportunity to network with experienced business professionals and entrepreneurs in the hope of making my business the best that it can be.”

The regional round of competition will take place at the 2009 ACE Regional Exposition in Halifax, Nova Scotia on March 6th, 2009. Provincial Champions will each present their business to a live panel of business professionals who will decide the two Regional Champions, who will each receive a $1,000 cash prize and move on to the final round of competition taking place at the 2009 ACE National Exposition in Toronto on May 6th, 2009. The National Champion will be named and will receive a $10,000 cash prize and represent Canada at the international level of competition, the Global Student Entrepreneur Awards, if he or she qualifies.

“Given the changing economy student entrepreneurs are being forced to take on new challenges to ensure their businesses thrive” says Amy Harder, President of ACE. “ACE provides an experience that strengthens and supports student development to create a more sustainable and enterprising Canada.”
